Calendula

Hooray! At least one of the plants I sowed in my cutting garden is flowering. The flowers really are a very bright orange. All I need now is a lime-green sitting room to put them in, eek!

The Cutting Garden Takes Shape

Hollyhock seedlings
The cutting garden is beginning to take shape. These holyhocks are doing very well. I also have some Asters (yellow and orange) and a few Cosmos seedlings. The Dahlia seedlings were mostly lost to a dry spell a few days ago – I have one left though. The other flowers in the new cutting garden will be sown directly in the soil next month; flowers such as Cornflower, Calendula, Nigella and more Cosmos. I have already started planting the Gladioli corms that I ordered in December. I put five in two weeks ago and another five will go in this week. I already have my eye on a nice oversized vase to fit all my lovely new flowers in.

Dahlias

All the Dahlias are out now on the plot and they look really great against all the green of the vegetables. There are so many that I decided to capture some for my own purposes to brighten up the windowsill at home. They’re so intricate, I never tire of looking at them and they seem to be lasting very well indoors. Next year I want to grow some gladioli. David, one of our neighbours at the plot grows them and they’re really beautiful. He gave us some to take home and they were so big that they were nearly hitting the kitchen ceiling. So that’s on next year’s ‘flowers to grow’ list.
Infact I’m so excited about next year’s plot that I’ve already sketched out a new plan – but that’s for another post. For now enjoy the Dahlias.

Dahlia’s Nearly Out

The Dahlia’s have started to flower – I’m so excited! I had planned to have the whole middle bed dedicated to flowers. I bought some cornflower seeds and some wild flower seeds and scattered them around in a random fashion. However, we went on holiday and when we came back the bindweed had reared it’s ugly head again (particularly in the bed where the flower seeds were). Also I wasn’t sure which sproutings were weed and which were flowers. So, I’m afraid the whole lot had to come up. But the good news is that the Dahlia’s stayed, they’re just blooming and when they’re out they’ll look luscious in their sexy red outfits. Makes a change from green!
